The enthusiasm of Japanese people for the Olympics is so strong that it is difficult to believe that they are aware of the current pan-global epidemic of corona virus.
I am an American, but if I may judge from my experience of staying in Japan for five years, what underlies this enthusiasm seems to be their nearly blind worship to sport.

Wonderfully, when someone criticises another in Japan, it is often heard that he has no merits but learning, while it's very rare that he is said to be good at nothing but running or swimming or kicking a ball.
The truth is, however, that the man with a sound body, at large, seldom has so sound a mind as his body. Though the population of athletes is smaller than that of scholars, crimes committed by the former are far oftener heard of.
It is almost a myth that professional wrestlers never hurt common people with their fists. Needless to say, the bully in a school is seldom a student whose achievement in learning is above the average.

Such a disregard for learning by Japanese people may have much to do with the fact that they didn't get angry so much when PM Suga lynched scholars unfairly
